Understanding the Canadian Dental system
As an Indian dentist who is looking to expand my professional sphere beyond India, Canada was an obvious choice. The working conditions, the high demand for dentists, and the opportunity to live in a culturally diverse country like Canada were too good to pass up. However, before I could make my move, I first needed to understand the Canadian dental system. Just like India, Canada too has a well-regulated dental industry. A key component of the Canadian dental system is the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB). The NDEB is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a competent standard for dentists in Canada.
Eligibility Criteria for Indian Dentists in Canada
After understanding the Canadian dental system, the next step for me was to know the eligibility criteria. To practice dentistry in Canada, it is mandatory to hold a BDS/DDS/DMD degree and be certified by the NDEB. There are two routes to this certification: The first is a two-year Qualifying or Degree Completion Program and the second is the NDEB Equivalency Process.
The Qualifying or Degree Completion Program
The Qualifying or Degree Completion Program is offered by many Canadian universities. This program is designed to familiarize internationally trained dentists to the practice of dentistry in Canada. It is a two-year program that includes both theoretical and practical training. Upon successful completion of this program, dentists are eligible to take the NDEB certification examinations.
The NDEB Equivalency Process
The second route to practising dentistry in Canada is the NDEB Equivalency Process. This process involves several assessments, starting with an Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge, an Assessment of Clinical Judgement, and an Assessment of Clinical Skills. On successful completion of these assessments, one is eligible to take the NDEB certification examinations.
NDEB Certification Examinations
Once you are eligible for the NDEB certification examinations, you are one step closer to practising dentistry in Canada. These examinations consist of a written examination and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination. The written examination tests your theoretical knowledge, while the clinical examination tests your practical skills.
Getting a License to Practice
After successfully clearing the NDEB certification examinations, the next step is to get a license to practice from the dental regulatory authority of the province or territory where you wish to work. Different provinces may have different additional requirements, and it is important to be aware of these before you apply.
Job Opportunities and Scope
With my license in hand, I then proceeded to explore job opportunities. In Canada, dentists can either work in private practice or be employed in hospitals, universities, or the public health service. The demand for dentists in Canada is high, making it a great place for Indian dentists looking to establish a successful career.
